If you've got a socket 754 or 939/940 motherboard then no !

If you've got a socket A board then it might be....

Hmm upgrades are always difficult to judge. What's your budget, what's your current PC config, and what do you want to do with your PC (e.g. play older games at acceptable frame rate, or play the latest games like Crysis on high settings)? I used to have an AMD 3200+ and went to an AMD Opteron 170 (dual core 2.00 Ghz CPU) and the performance boost was worthwhile.

If your on a 939 then the dule core Opteron will give it a big kick up the rear my 180 did at little cost
Newer games need shed loads of GPU find the best graf card you can afford that you can then move it on to your new kit in time
you pays your money you takes the chance remember research research all you can
