I felt like starting a thread about old games you remember/miss/still play, mainly because I recently found a load of old gems in my attic, including Vampire bloodlines, Thief box set and a working N64 with Goldeneye in it
While I find out if they're as good as I remember, I thought I might as well find out what games the rest of you play/played. Or if that fails, at least give Melon another thread to spam into obscurity
Neon you are now welcome into my Harem and its not spam its the truth!!!
I still hold a very special place in my heart for all the Monkey Islands I still own most of them and really need to sit through them again as they are very enjoyable. I also liked Day of The Tentacle though that was deffo a bit harder. I like most of the old point and clicks the Indiana Jones one as well
How appropriate, you fight like a Melon (wonder how often you hear that)
I remember having a box set of Monkey Island as well, long ago... I had a lot of box sets once. No idea what happened to most of them. And insult boinking just isn't the same
Elite cannon fodder championship manager 3 syndicate total war civilization tie fighter vs x-wing goldeneye and perfect dark rock n roll racing sensible soccer half life
plus more when i can think of them, i will happily sometimes rake out some of these that i still own and play them, even now, classic games that are still playable.
anyone remember the original Commander Keen trilogy? first game i played...
other really old games i've played, in no particular order:
Pacman Dune II Command and Conquer Red Alert (the original) Colonisation (grandaddy of the civ series) Descent (I, II and III) Seek and Destroy Discworld (I and II, although II's more recent. Noir smells of fail) Doom Machines (dodgy fps/rts hybrid) Perfect Dark (whored to absolute gory death) Grand Theft Auto I and II (III and above don't count on this list.) Destruction Derby Apache Longbow er
Prince of Persia (the original!) Starcraft (and brood wars, of course) Mortal Kombat III (on a pc! with proper controllers!) Warcraft (I, II and III) Baldur's Gate Morrowind (i know, not old, just couldn't resist sneaking it in) Arcanum(same as above) Theme Hospital Dungeon Keeper Need for Speed II not really that old, but Age of Empires needs to be here.
well after recently installing a zx spectrum emulator ive been playing Manic miner and spyhunter and starwars. Truly old games tbh, but playing on a speccy (emulator) proper takes me back to when i was in short shorts
the thing that having some n00bs round at my place has taught me, is that me and dermo are the only people in existence that reverse the y axis on their mouse.
comes from ye olde days pwning in f117a stealth bomber, x-wing, tie-fighter, freespace, freespace2, x-wing alliance, Combat Air Patrol, freelancer, the wing commander games and more.

And me. And I have "Forward" on my right mouse button from playing too much Duke Nukem 3D. I don't replay old games often. These are the ones I have replayed.
Castle Wolfenstein 3D. A Windows version was on "Return to Castle Wolfenstein". I loaded it up for old times sake. Played for about 3 minutes. Great at the time but now ...
Duke Nukem 3D. I found a Windows port a year or so back. Still good gameplay, very funny and very rude I hope "DN Forever" never appears because it can't be in this class.
H-L. Got H-L: Source when it was released. Brilliant gameplay even by H-L2 standards.
Deus Ex. Replayed this only a few months back. In the top 5 games I've ever played, even compared to modern releases. I'm not sure a developer will ever be allowed to put this much effort into a game, again.
Out of, probably no one's, interest, I keep a rated list of all the games I've played (except casual games like Peggle ). Here's my Personal History of the FPS. If you do look, I'll apologise now for thinking Quake was only middling (but a breakthrough technology-wise) and that Doom 3 was hugely overated. Whenever I "publish" this list, that's the "feedback" I always get.
Joe: That reminds me, I need to find the rest of my N64 games, I'm sure I had more than just Goldeneye. (mainly because Majora's mask is too freaky to forget)
And would I be rubbing too many members the wrong way if I say I don't know most of the games they've mentioned?
Unless I include my older brother's games, the oldest I can remember is DN 3D. In safe mode, before any one screams about bad parenting
EDIT: Joe, what game is that screenshot from? I know that's Link, but it definitely isn't ocarina
Haha you need to get some of the Banjo Kazooie and Kirby: The Crystal Shards going on! N46 was fo' sho' one of my favourite consoles ever And interestingly enough that is from Ocarina, it's from and interesting Beta that was made a few years ago that attempted to utilise Project 64 to make an online version on PC. It pretty much failed, but it was an interesting enough idea that i took a screeny of it =P I also started playing Monkey Island 1 again because of this thread, i plan to play 1 through 3 then move onto Discworld. Thank you UKMD xD
2 Favourite games from digging through my memory, are Jack the Nipper 2 in Coconut Capers and a brilliant game at the time on Spectrum was Laser Squad.
of course nothing beats the old pastime of chucking bricks at swans...

|UKMD| Wolfey wrote ... Nice write up Greybeard. Would have rated Fear higher myself. NOLF2 was amazing game when I played it, even co op was fun ... Oh hold on you read PC Zone! DIE!!! PC Gamer FTW!!! lol
Thanks, Wolfey. It's good to look back on what you've played, so I always spend a couple of minutes updating it when I finish a game.
I am so glad you're a NOLF 'fan'. They're overlooked so often. The script and voice acting in NOLF2 is as good as it gets. My only issue with FEAR is/was repetition. Didn't stop me buying the expansions, though I get the feeling that you're a "run'n'gun" purist, in which case I see where our views differ. I quite like the twiddly bits around the edges in games, as well
I can only cope with FPSs but methinks you're a pretty damn serious gamer all round. "PC GAMER", though .....
hoho ive managed tog et my hands on an original spectrum zx, with rubber keys and everything, its a damn shame i dont own a cassette player! ebay ahoy. i still hold a special place in my heart for the dizzy games, remember them on my Amstrad CPC, what a system.
Elite was and still is simply the greatest game ever. cept maybe the sequel, which made landing a much simpler task. hm i could list a few more but i think Nick pretty much covered my list.
Ive been a gamer pretty much my whole life. As for FPS, run'n'gun are good fun but I do love Deus Ex, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and so on. However the style and horror of Fear was great for me.
Strategy games are cool, old days like Cannon Fodder was awesome. C&C's rule, wasnt a fan of supreme commander. Warcraft 3 still holds dear to me. Busy getting into Company of Heroes
Other games to note - Dizzy Collection = How can an egg save the day? lol Streets of Rage = 2nd one is amazing. Greatest Co-op beat em up ever Gunstar Heroes = Amazing 2player shoot em up, typical japanese over the top battles Urban Strike = Isometric Helecopter game which was enjoyable throughout trilogy Soliel = Interesting RPG like Zelda, but had animals help you with special stuff. Weird story Wonderboy = One of the first arcade games I played and loved. Still do Flashback = Wonderfull platform game which still stands the test of time Virtua Racing = 3D racing game with split screen. First got this out of blockbusters
Plenty more im sure. But just a few that came to mind
Just realised that I'm the only person so far who's mentioned a full on stealth game (the Thief's I mentioned. Still best stealth games ever...when you get them to work. Modern drivers aren't compatible with Thief 1 )
I know Deus Ex has stealth, and so does System Shock 2, which makes sense since they were made by the same people that made Thief
The only other stealth games I've played aren't really old
(I've played demos of Tenchu and NOLF 2, but I don't think that counts)
Some proper oldies for the C64 Manic Miner = Fantastic tune and crazy one screen levels Platoon = Again amazing music and fantastic gameplay. Was rock hard in the later levels too Ghostbusters = Best version so far (even now) Creatures = Weird gameplay but charmingly addictive

Blimey Greybeard!
I've just spent most of my lunch hour reading your 'History of FPS Gaming' (all 26 pages!) and I was impressed. However......you have waaaaaaayyyyyy too much time on your hands!
I'm envious
DMW - some days you're the Dogg, some days you're the tree.......
I was going to delve in to the history of fps but when i saw you only gave Call of Duty 3 1/2 i decided i hate you =P Will have a further look later 1. Golden Axe - epic and i still haven't finished it! 2. Streets of Rage - think i completed it with my dad the first time round, fun times! 3. Baldur's Gate 2 - i still play this despite having completed it about 10 times, i have never loved a game more! 4. Age of Empires 2 - My first forray into online gaming and i loved it! 5. Counter Strike Source - ok so its not that old but i've spent so much time on it i have to mention it 6. Football Manager 2006 - i still buy the new game every year but this is what started it all!
I will leave off on the rambling now and possibly try and find my old megadrive!

Wow! Thank you but I assumed folk would just dip in and look at a favourite game or two. I'm impressed and honoured you ploughed through all my waffle. You probably noticed the increase in frequency of games played from 2005 when I took the firm's money and headed for retirement. I do, indeed, have too much time on my hands ... I'm pleased to say

Now, that's more like the reaction it usually gets . I did put a big warning up that it was subjective. Alas, realistic "modern" warfare games just don't do it for me. This is a shame because I know the reputation that CoD has, in particular, but just not my thing. I also doubt I'll ever test the water of CS:S on that basis. My loss. I hope you agree with some of the other bits
Lol, in the words of someone your entitled to your own stupid opinion Its actually nice to have a new opinion rather than 'omfg this game is teh awesum roflcopter' though its a pity your missing out on CS. You've backed up your opinions with reason so its all good! Like the painkiller review where you've gone back and changed it. Also its a game i love, especially (if you can manage it which is hard) where you can launch a grenade then shoot a stake through it to turn it into a form of guided missle! I couldn't see call of duty 4 in your list, so i'd say play that because i think the story is brilliant!

Welcome!
Imagine This: Going to a massive game server, where everyone knows everyone else, its all taken in a good manner and there to be enjoyed. The way Gaming should be. Thats what we do every day!
Like None Other Team MX is like no other 'clan' ever conceived, we are a team, Team MX. We're probably the largest UK clan ever, we have over 170 team members with well over 130 of them actively playing. Team MX is over a year old now, celabrating its first birthday in November last year. Headed up by the worlds biggest n00b, MoggieX and backed up by some outstanding n00blets, known as the core admins.
We don't recruit twats! Quite frankly we ain't interested in matches, or 'twats' (mainly gobby teanagers, you know the ones), if this is something you're looking for, or are, you're not in the right place at all. However, IF you are a utter n00b (like I am, MoggieX) and enjoy the 'whole' online gaming expereince, where you can make friends from all over the world, then you have found yourself a new home.
A Little More About Team MX Also quite interestingly, every Team MX member gets a limited amount of admin privilages, its been the norm for people to pay for such rights, here you get them free and you can also feel at ease that there is only small group of admins, the core admins that have the access to any player abuse commands. So you can play in realtive safety, knowing that the server you're on is patrolled by an army of admins. We have members from the ages of 9 to well past retirement, probably with an average age twice that of other clans, a prime example that this is no ordinary clan.
Joining Team MX We don't let just any old person join, you have to prove yourself over a long period of time. If you're turning up here thinking you're going to join us in a few days, you're sorely mistaken. In most cases it takes over a month to be recruited and thats just the lucky ones! People (not players) rarely leave Team MX, if they do, we never really seem to get rid of them, lol.
